Keeping Holiday Traditions Alive in Spite of the Chaos

It seems like I’ve been working non-stop trying to get all my projects done so we can put our house on the market and move! I am working every day, but I’m trying to remember to make this Holiday special in spite of everything that needs to be done.  I may be participating in all these activities in between coats of paint or drywall mud, but I am participating.  We are making memories here – after all.

Putting up a tree.
It’s fake and pre-lit which I think is a fantastic idea…until one set of lights stop working.  Luckily that was last year.  This year everything went smoothly.  As long as you don’t count the actual decorating because Maddie and I always butt heads when it comes to that.  We’re both control freaks I guess!
“Holiday Baking”
This year that meant finding a pretty platter on which to present all the cookies and treats I purchased and decorating a couple pre-baked and assembled “kits”

Playing in the Snow!
My part in this “FUN” was standing (inside where it’s warm) at the window, taking pictures and giving a thumbs up whenever Madison glanced over to see if I was still watching.

And lastly, probably most importantly, is our
Christmas Countdown!

In the past, we’ve done elaborate displays, stockings hung down the banister,  fun treasure hunts… some kind of fun and creative way to give our daughter one SMALL gift every day in December until the big 25 arrives!

This is it this year!
A box in the middle of the kitchen table that has a new surprise inside every day!
There aren’t even tags for an actual countdown and
sometimes she has to ask 3 times before I  remember to “fill it”.
But she loves it!
And not because there is anything spectacular inside. (Most of the “gifts” are chocolate.)
It’s exciting because it’s one of our traditions.
And we’re trying our best to keep those going in spite of whatever else is going on in our lives!
And by the way, my to-do list is down to practically nothing.  Only 327 to go!

Thank goodness for a good zoom lens, cause I never leave my porch for all my kids' snow pictures. I'm glad you're keeping the magic alive. You're so amazing. I don't do anything fun AND I have no excuse!

Wow that tree is huge, I was thinking about going pre-lit, but then if (when) they burn out I will be cursing like a sailor and that's just such a buzz kill.Is it egg nog time yet?? (hic) :)

I hear ya on the tree lights! We had the same thing happen last year, too. I stay inside and do the same thing while the kids are outside playing in the snow. ;) Good luck with your list. Mine seems to be never ending.

I am glad to see someone else 'fess up to "holiday baking" the same way I do it.And I am so impressed that you did a Christmas tree with everything you've got going on. Seriously, woman… you are an animal!

Last Christmas, we were still digging out from under the fire, so I completely feel you here. In the end, you have all the things your REALLY need right there with you already.

Kudos for keeping traditions alive even amidst the moving etc :) Ugh… I feel ya on the strand of burned out lights. I used to have a store and we had a dozen large trees one year… ALL with at least one strand burned out and ALL with the really tightly woven strands that you had to un-knot, too. My hands and arms looked like I got in back alley cat fights for weeks. 'Tis the season ;)

You are a wonderful mom to keep traditions alive even when everything else is in upheaval. I really like how you do your countdown. I am thinking of changing ours up next year and I really really like yours. We just did homemade gingerbread and….I am thinking kits might be the way to go next time. Seriously…and we don't have major home renovations or anything like that going on. :) Merry Christmas and thank you for being such a great friend!
