How to make a Magnetic Pin Holder
This pretty Magnetic Pin Holder would be a great gift idea for someone who loves to sew.
Here’s what you need:
1 glass or ceramic plate or shallow bowl (dollar store), 1 glass or ceramic candle holder (dollar store), a strong magnet
Step 1: Glue the magnet to the bottom of the plate/bowl.
Apply adhesive to both magnet and plate and then wait a minute or two before putting the two together.
Step 2: Glue the plate to the candlestick.
Apply adhesive to both pieces and wait a minute before putting them together just like in step 1.
Let the adhesive cure for 2 to 3 days.
Step 3: Prime and Paint
I bought X-I-M spray primer from Sherwin Williams. It was $7 but it’s the only primer I could find for glass.
Prime
Paint
(I chose a Glossy spray paint.)
And you are done!
The magnet holds the pins in the bowl so they are easy to grab because they don’t slip all over and they don’t accidentally fall out.
I spent $5 on the bowl, candlestick and pins.
This project was super fun because it was SO easy. And it was very inexpensive.
I love easy and inexpensive, it’s my favorite kind of project!

Well it was only going to take a second to put a coat of paint on it and I didn’t want to run up 3 flights of stairs to change for that. I just had to make sure the nozzle was pointing in the right direction and luckily, I didn’t screw that up.
Great idea! I’m wondering if the pins will scratch off the paint. Does the primer keep that from happening? I wouldn’t care about it for myself, but I was thinking that it would make such a great gift. Thanks for the clever idea! Lisa~
If you use the right primer it should hold up (as any other painted surface would.) That’s why I spent $7 on a spray can of primer If the primer adheres to the glass, then the paint will adhere to the primer… I wouldn’t recommend scraping it hard with your keys or anything though.

Will the magnet effect the machine? The magnet’s not THAT strong but better safe than sorry.

Maybe this is the solution to my pins constantly ending up on the floor, thanks to all my sewing helpers! Also, I think I read somewhere that using glass etching spray works as a primer for spray painting glass. I am sure that is more widely available then the glass primer. Though, I have no experience with how it actually works!
That’s interesting. As I was standing in the aisle looking at all the primers, I saw some glass etching spray and wondered how that would turn out. It seems like it would make the surface too rough but I may just have to try it now. Thanks for the tip.
